One of my favourite parts about being a researcher, is the opportunity to talk about my research with fishers, students, and the general public!

COMSCICON CANADA 2019
In July of 2019 I travelled to McMaster University to attend the first ever Communicating Science Conference in Canada (ComSciConCAN)!
Myself and 49 other attendees were chosen from ~400 applicants to attend the conference with the goal to develop the skills needed to communicate our research and ideas to our peers, experts in other fields, policy makers, and the general public.
Working in fishery science, I am often discussing my research with fishers, government representatives, and the public. By attending ComSciCon I was able to continue to grow as a science communicator, and I am constantly applying the skills I developed at this workshop in my day-to-day.

LETTERS TO A PRE-SCIENTIST
Letters to a Pre-Scientist (LPS) is an outreach program that matches scientist with middle-school students, and involves communication via a classic snail-mail pen-pal style! The three key beliefs to LPS are (1) breaking down barriers to education, (2) every student can be a future scientist, and (3) no opt-out approach.
The 2019-2020 school year was my first time as an LPS pen-pal, and it has been such a rewarding experience! I was matched with 6th grader Victoria, who loves to write. This past January I was invited to Skype in with her class and talk more about my work as a scientist and how I got to where I am today.
PINT OF SCIENCE CANADA
I am very excited to be bringing the awesome, international, science outreach festival, Pint of Science to Saint John for the first time on May 11-12th 2020!
As City Co-ordinator I will be organizing some awesome talks by local researchers that are accessible to science and non-science folks alike!
